NC STATE GOVERNMENT: RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE FROM $7.25 PER HOUR TO $10 PER HOUR

    2. Petition by

The average cost of living in the state is listed around $40,000+ per year. In order for a citizen working 40 hours per week to be able to sufficiently fulfill the average cost of living, the minimum wage would need to be raised to $10+ per hour. Federal statistics prove that if the average minimum wage increased at the same rate as the rate of inflation in the United States economy, the new minimum wage would be around $10.74 per hour, however, it is currently at $7.25. The current annual income for an employee working full time at the current minimum wage of $7.25 is $15,080, far below the listed cost of living. The number of states where a minimum wage worker can afford a two-bedroom apartment working a 40-hour week is 0. The number of times Congress passed legislation to increase the minimum wage in the last 30 years is 3. The number of states (including the District of Columbia) which have raised their minimum wage above the federal level of $7.25 is 19. The number of states that annually increase their state minimum to keep up with the rising cost of living is 10. The percentage of Americans that support gradually raising the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to at least $10.00 an hour, according to an October 2010 poll is 67%. In light of these facts, North Carolina needs to raise the minimum wage from the federally established $7.25 up to $10.25 in order to provide employees with the proper income to sustain acceptable living conditions for themselves and their families.
