Bluefin tuna can’t speak for themselves, but WE CAN speak for them!
Today, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) ended its annual meeting in South Africa. In a conservation victory, key players at the table stood up, with you, for the bluefin. Instead of letting more tuna be caught (Spain wanted an increase of 14%!), the Commission held its ground and maintained the same fishing levels as last year – levels which are just now allowing bluefin to begin to recover from decades of over exploitation.
But while the international community has spoken, WE need to continue to tell the US government to stand up and do its part, protecting bluefin close to home. While ICCAT sets the maximum amount of bluefin that can be captured or discarded at sea because it is over the quota, it’s up to our government to decide if we want to do better, and to ensure we’re fishing sustainably.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for lending your voice to help conserve US populations of bluefin tuna, and please share our petition with your friends.
