Save Martins Lane

    1. Petition by

      Nantucket Preservation Trust

In May the Superior Court overturned the Nantucket Board of Selectmen's affirmation of the Historic District Commission’s decision to protect historic Martins Lane, and without an appeal this charming one-block street in the heart of Nantucket’s historic core will be changed forever. Martins Lane is a destination and landmark in itself and we believe its historic elements and the street setting in general are features that help make the island special and are worth protecting for today and future generations.

We have been coming to Nantucket for 40 years in April (Daffy) and October and watched some good and some bad changes to the ambience of the island.

As the president of a small historical society I know how hard it is to keep the town's personality and charm in the face of parking needs. Nantucket's unique needs make it

even harder. But don't make such unnecessary changes to Martin's Lane!!!

Historic character of Nantucket is important Topreserve. There is no way to restore once we lose it. I believe the purchasers knew there was no parking when they bought the property.

It's another childhood memory that's about to disappear. Those memories are becoming few and far between. I was born and raised in Nantucket. All those quirkey little oddities that some people complain about are memories to us.
