Stop killing and discriminating against pit bulls!

Pit Bulls are a breed with an undeserved bad reputation. Not all pit bulls are vicious machines and all of them deserve a chance, or second chance. They should not be punished for their looks, or one persons dislike of them. Mississippi Animal Rescue League is doing just that. They are choosing to kill innocent puppies, and full grown dogs who are very much adoptable, because of their breed.

You might say all pit bulls are born mean, and to be honest you're wrong. Any dog can be trained to be mean, to attack for no reason, and to be unruly. Any dog can also be trained to be loving, protective, obedient, and your best friend. Some dogs have pasts were they were treated unfairly, but with time, training, and love, they can, and will come around. Mississippi Animal Rescue League aren't giving these dogs a chance.

Many people have suggested rescues or know of rescues that would be willing to help with the pit bulls and find them homes, however Mississippi Animal Rescue League chooses to not accept their help. When confronted on their facebook page with a simple question of why do you kill pit bulls instead of adopting them out, or sending them to other rescues, many people have been blocked, and their comments deleted. Phone calls have been ignored, and e-mails have not been returned. We need to make the public aware of what they are doing in order to see a change, or get an answer.

We received this e-mail from an independent pit bull rescuer who is located in Mississippi. All names have been removed to protect the individuals who are putting themselves at risk to help these pit bulls before they are taken to this "rescue".
"not sure that my reply on change.org went through. i am an independent pit bull rescuer in Jackson, MS. In september 2012, i was contacted by a another rescue that a perfectly healthy and sweet pit bull needed to be rescued ASAP or it would be put down that day. the dog had not even made it to MARL yet, but the  officer and others who knew the rescue knew she would die that day if taken to MARL. This dog was my precious M**** that i adopted out in December. VERY sick, but very sweet girl that did wonderfully in my home and that is doing wonderfully in her forever home. there are a few people that try and save pitties and there is someone that will stash pits so they won't be taken to MARL because they know they will be put down almost immediately. this person is a fellow pit bull advocate and rescuer that has since started a program to foster and rescue these pits because of the fast rate they are being killed. i have been called on numerous occasions to foster a pit because people just can't bring themselves to take them to MARL. I currently have Buddha, another bully boy that escaped MARL because good citizens were made aware what would happen if they took him there.

When i first got M****, i was desperate to get her into a rescue. i wanted to save her life but couldn't keep her long term so i called all the local rescues. MARL was on that list. Though i have rescued 13 pits, i hadn't rescued any in the Jackson area yet and was not aware of their policy. When I called, i was told that they would take her and find a home for her. LUCKILY a rescue partner informed me that she would never make it out. i later found out that MARL is where i saved her from in the first place. Through Muzzy's facebook page, i have learned more and more about MARL. I have had animal activists and animal control officers call me to learn more about her and they have revealed more and more about what happens inside the walls of MARL. Pitties DO NOT even make it to the adoption floor and it is very possible that they are not even held in case their owners come forward. As a pit bull owner, to know that if one of my dogs got lost, that i would never see him again makes my blood boil. 2-3 weeks ago there was a desperate attempt to find the owner's of a pit bull because it had been taken to MARL by a good Samaritan that thought they were doing the right thing. the dog had a collar and looked like it belonged to someone. i'm almost 100% certain that dog's owners were't found and it was quickly put to sleep. Not only that, but MARL never made an attempt to post his picture on their facebook or find his owners. his picture was no where. no one knew he was there.

Sorry this message is so long, but these angels are getting lost. good people are bringing them in thinking they are doing the right thing and these dogs are being murdered the second they walk in the door. NO ONE KNOWS THEY ARE THERE. there are no pictures, no faecbook posts, no pleas for help....nothing."

Facts:

-Pit bulls have an 86% American Temperament Testing Society passing rate. That’s higher than miniature poodles (77.9%), beagles (80.3%), or collies (79.7%)

-A study by Dr. Brady Barr of National Geographic found the bite pressure (PSI) of a pit bull is less than that of a German Shepherd or Rottweiler.

-Boxers, Bullmastiffs, and Bulldogs are commonly mistaken for pit bulls.

-Pit bulls were known in the early 1900’s as “nanny dogs” because they were tolerant and gentle with children. Helen Keller’s dog, “Sir Thomas”, was a pit bull, and so was “Petey”, the canine mascot of the Little Rascals.

-According to the Humane Society of the United States, pit bulls are the “most abused, misunderstood dog breed”, comprising an estimated 70% of dogs housed and euthanized in urban animal shelters.

- Pit Bulls are commonly used as therapy dogs. Whether they are visiting a senior care facility or helping someone recover from an emotional accident, Pit Bulls are making a mark as outstanding therapy dogs.

-Pit Bulls are used in Search and Rescue work. One example of well known SAR Pit Bulls is Kris Crawford and her dogs. Kris and her dogs have helped save the lives of many people during their efforts.

-Pit Bulls serve as narcotic and bomb sniffing dogs. One Pit Bull, Popsicle (named that because he was found in an old freezer) has the largest recorded single drug find in Texas history.

-The Pit Bull was so popular in the early 1900's they were our mascot not only in World War One, but World War Two as well. They were featured on recruiting and propoganda posters during this time period.

- Sgt. Stubby. A Pit Bull war hero. Stubby was wounded in action twice, he saved his entire platoon by warning them of a poison gas attack and he single handedly captured a German spy.

A few days ago MARL posted a picture of a lost dog which happened to be a pit bull! Could it be a step in the right direction? They haven't posted a pit on their page in months, so we're getting there one small step at a time! Please continue to share!

While scrolling through the reasons why people have signed we came across this. MARL can't hide anymore. We need to continue to respectfully ask that they stop their discrimination and killing! We understand that some pits rescued from dog fighting situations are not always adoptable and are put to sleep. But innocent puppies do not deserve this treatment!

We are all upset, and angry over this situation, however if anyone is being rude or making threats against MARL stop! You are allowing themselves to make them seem like the victims and not these innocent animals. Being rude and making threats will get us nowhere and just hurt the cause. No matter how angry you are we need to be polite and respectful. We'll get further!

MARL shared on their facebook page yesterday that the director would make a statement today, February 13, 2013. It is 8:00 pm EST here where I live, and there has been no statement posted on their facebook page, or website. They continue to lie, and give no answers. We can only assume that they don't give answers because they don't want to admit to what they do!! Please share this petition on your local rescue pages, and any other animal, news, media related pages. We are these pits only voices, and we need to make sure we are heard loud and clear. Without us they will continue to be killed. We need to do everything we can to save them!
