Create laws enforcing Michigan's breastfeeding laws

Breastfeeding is something every mom should feel comfortable about doing. Michigan state law says: 41.181 Adoption of ordinances by township board.

(4) As used in this section, “public nudity” means knowingly or intentionally displaying in a public place, or for payment or promise of payment by any person including, but not limited to, payment or promise of payment of an admission fee, any individual’s genitals or anus with less than a fully opaque covering, or a female individual’s breast with less than a fully opaque covering of the nipple and areola. Public nudity does not include any of the following:

(a) A woman’s breastfeeding of a baby whether or not the nipple or areola is exposed during or incidental to the feeding.

However, breastfeeding mothers can still be harassed by establishments and the people who work there if others are made uncomfortable. Nursing mothers can be asked to leave or even removed from the place they are nursing in. This is blatant discrimination to nursing mothers. This petition is asking that the state finds a way to enforce these laws so mothers can comfortably breastfeed in public, covered or uncovered, and be protected by laws.

One of our signers received a letter in the mail from State Representative Sean McCann. While he is not the person who can help us with my petition, he has given us the contact information for the people who can! I am sending a letter right now. He is however supportive of the petition and will do what he can to help!

This is important to me because it is pertinent that mothers not be discouraged to breastfeed because exposure of their breast is considered indecent when in reality all they are doing is giving their child the proper nutrition they need. There are so many struggles that come with breastfeeding, and acceptance of the public should not be one of them.

I have breastfed both of my children and feel strongly that it is what is best for babies. Every endeavor should be made to make it as easy as possible for mothers to do so.
