Change bylaws to Allow HS Student with Down Syndrome to play basketball

      Detroit, MI

There is a student who attends Ishpeming HS and has Down Syndrome. He is not allowed to play his senior year, because he will be 19 y/o and will be too old per current MHSAA by-laws.

The MHSAA is reprehensible in it's denial of by-law changes proposed by the Ishpeming School District and the boy's father. Other states, like Ohio, allow exceptions to their age requirements. In Ohio, the OHSAA.org bylaw: 4-2-1 stipulates two exceptions allowing students who have disabilities to participate beyond the age limit.

Step up MSHAA and change your by-laws!

Even the NCAA grants medical waivers for athletes. I find it reprehensible that these individuals won't grant one for someone with a scientifically documented and diagnosed serious disability. Put yourself in the child's position. Wow. Just wow.

I feel that ever child should be able to play in sports and not be told they can not because of age or illness!!!!!

I have a great niece with downs syndrome and she should be allowed to play a sport if that is her desire and age should not be a factor, since most children with downs syndrome may physically become older, mentally they will always be a child.

In a country where too many kids are stuck inside playing video games, it astounds me that a school system would try to keep a kid from being active in this way! Let'em play!

My son has Down syndrome and will likely be "too old" to play in high school as well, which is ridiculous.
