My name is Leigh, and I am sixteen years old. I am an award-winning cello player. Or at least I was. The orchestra program in the Chippewa Hills School District (where I attend high school) was discontinued last summer as a result of lack of funds to hire another teacher after the previous one moved to a different city for another job. It devastated all the orchestra students, seeing as for us, orchestra was the air we breathed. We had the option to go into band, and some of us were already in the band program, but not all could afford to rent another instrument. All the passion, all the talent, and all the hard work we put into our string instruments went to waste for a lot of students, myself included.
I have Asperger's Syndrome (a milder form of Autism), and orchestra was what I used to help calm myself down when I got overwhelmed. We were a family. I would give the world to have that back.
That's why I'm asking for your help. I want Governor Snyder to devote more of the budget into schools, and their arts programs. I don't want another Michigan student to face what I did. That's why I'm asking, even if you don't live in the state, to help me fight and win the battle for the arts.

This year, my high school brought back back the orchestra program which inspired me to start this petition. But I am not giving up. I thought I was going to, but I'm not. My school district was lucky enough to have such a large group of supporters and that were willing to donate money to help us out. I am still carrying on because I know that some Michigan schools aren't as fortunate. Keep signing! We need as much support as we can get so that other schools won't face the devastation that comes as a result of cutting the fine arts programs. You will not see an end to my fight for this cause until I see change being made. Thank you all all for your continued support.

I play guitar and love most types of music. Art is essential.

Art is a great basis for expanding our thinking. IT also gives kids a chance to be successful in new ways.

With the governor being from the Ann Arbor area he should realize the value of education and as the latest survey of hiring company executives showed, students with a liberal education. Music is not just important, it is essential. For these students, they should have a teacher. Do the right thing, Governor. Remember how the film incentives got botched and don't let it happen to these students as well. Call me if you like. These programs are important.

Fine arts are every bit as important as other academics!! Perhaps even more important...
