Last year, Michael Bloomberg's charitable arm, Bloomberg Philanthropies, made a commitment to tackling climate change and improving air quality by transitioning to cleaner energy sources. However, just a few weeks ago, he announced his support for fracking and is intent on funding environmental organizations to work with the oil and gas industry to develop regulations to allow fracking in states across the country.
This is outrageous! Tell Michael Bloomberg to stop using his foundation to fund policies to promote fracking across the country.
As you may know, fracking injects millions of gallons of fracking fluids -- a mixture of nearly 600 chemicals, water and sand -- into a well to create pressure that cracks open rocks underground, releasing natural gas. In countless communities around the country, fracking has had grievous consequences, ranging from water contamination and health problems to earthquakes.
As mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg has long opposed fracking in or near the NYC watershed, but now he is using his vast wealth to facilitate fracking in other parts of New York and in 14 states across the country, where experts believe 85 percent of the gas reserves are located. He has been quoted in the press as saying that renewable energy is 'not viable'
Tell Michael Bloomberg Foundation to stop funding fracking and instead fund the deployment of renewable energy across the country.
