I have never started a petition before and honestly never thought I would, but after the experience I had with my 4 1/2 year old son tonight I had to do something.  I took my son to McDonald's for dinner tonight at his request. He really wanted the toy he had seen a commercial for.  We don't often go there but tonight, since his great grandmother had just passed away, I said yes.  I wish I hadn't!  He politely ordered his food and asked for the Wizard of Oz toy with his happy meal since it is one of his favorite movies and the reason we were there.  The manager proceeded to tell him it was the girls toy and make a seriously disgusted face at me. I told her if that was the toy he requested, give it to him. She did, with a lot of reluctance, and then proceeded to have a conversation with one of her coworkers within ear shot of my son criticizing him for wanting the "girls toy." I am so mad I could spit nails!!  There is no such thing as a "boys toy" or a "girls toy."  McDonald's this is 2013, please keep your stereotypes off my child.  There is no need to make this world a more judgemental place than it already is by telling children they can't even play with Happy Meal toy they want.

I always wanted the "boy toy", but never got to have it because of both my parents saying no and employees just giving me the "girl toy". Its such a joke. Why do we keep perpetuating these ridiculous gender norms in this day and age?

not to mention the fact that a toy is just a toy if a girl can love transformers without being judged then cant a boy enjoy ponies or petshops without being judged

I want my daughter to not feel limited by other people's idea of what being a girl is.

Children should be allowed an opinion just as adults are. If a child would prefer 1 toy over another then that's what they should have. McDonald's as well as any other fast food chain with kids meals should remember that the kids today are the customers of tomorrow. At least that's what I learned when I had my first job at believe it or not McDonald's.

Kids just want to be kids and having employees ridicule a child for their choice of toy is extremely messed up and can be detrimental to how they view the world around them. They see and hear hate and they will learn to hate and criticize people for choices that are different, appearances that are different, personalities that are different. There is no rule that says girls should play with this while boys should play with that.
