Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament: No European Parliament secret ballot on the EU Budget

    1. Petition by

      Jon Worth

      Denmark

It is vital that the European Parliament, the only democratically accountable EU institution, has the very highest standards of openness and transparency. Hence the use of a secret ballot procedure to decide its position on the 7-year budget (financial perspectives) of the European Union is unacceptable.

The vote in the European Parliament on the EU budget (financial perspectives) must NOT be taken by secret ballot. EU citizens demand the very highest standards of openness and transparency from the European Parliament.

All EU institutions have a duty to be transparent to citizens. The European Parliament will shoot itself in the foot by holding a secret ballot and lose credibility on the budget question.

Elected representatives should always act openly, votes and

      statements should be on the

record. Secret votes should never take place in Democratic

      Parliaments.
