Raul Cardenas was expecting to be deported this month, torn from his wife and three children. Thanks to nearly 3000 Change.org members signing a petition started by his church, he has been granted a deferral until at least November to keep fighting for permanent status.

The Change.org petition caught the attention of two representatives, who sent letters to DHS on Raul's behalf after receiving thousands of signatures. Clergy from the Unitarian Universalist Church, where Raul is a volunteer, also staged a support rally outside his deportation hearing.

Raul and Judy Cardenas have been married for eight years with three children - their daughter, plus two sons from Judy's previous marriage who call Raul "Papi."  The Cardenases are like many American families except that Raul was born in Mexico and faces deportation in April -- their family will soon be torn apart *unless you help*.

Despite the fact that he is married to a U.S. citizen, and the father of another U.S. citizen, Raul is an undocumented worker and is scheduled to be deported by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in April.  There is currently no pathway to legal U.S. residency for him.

DHS has the discretion to defer Raul's case -- they have deferred similar cases -- but they need to feel political pressure.   Please sign the petition to halt the deportation of Jose Raul Cardenas Gonzalez of Denver.  Keep the Cardenas family together.

I was recently reminded that the first wave of illegal residents was in 1492. Plus I remember how grateful we were for migrant workers in World War II. This is clearly a situation where compassion for this family, instead of separation, should prevail.

There should be room in our laws for exceptions, and this should definitely be one of them. Help this wonderful family and Raul.

Judy Cardenas is the cousin to my friend, Judith, here in NJ. This story is truly heartbreaking and yet another symptom of an immigration system desperately in need of an overhaul. Please grant Raul an exemption and let him become a full functioning member of American society!

Like me, unless you are a Native American, we were all immigrants once. It is important to have intact families in the US raising families, together.
