Judge Bruce Kelsey/DuPage County: Restrict D. Skeberdis from owning pets pending counseling and supervision

David Skeberdis was charged with hoarding 368 live birds, plus over 150 dead birds. Many were injured, all were malnourished, inbred, and breathing toxic mold. Though most of the birds were adopted into new homes, David claims to still have a dozen birds left in his condemned home. He has refused free offers of counseling. The judge in this case is currently considering dropping all charges. This means David will be highly likely to repeat his offenses, as he will not receive counseling or supervision.  Birds do not appear, in this case, to be taken as seriously as pets such as dogs or cats. Birds do, however, feel pain, feel fear, and do not deserve abuse or neglect.

To:
Judge Bruce Kelsey, DuPage
We graciously ask that you restrict David Skeberdis from owning pets, pending successful completion of counseling and supervision. He has already admitted to owning twelve more birds, and has demonstrated abuse and neglect of 368 birds, plus over 150 birds that are now dead. Please prevent future cruelty from taking place.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

    1. VICTORY FOR OVER 500 BIRDS!!

      Kristin Ludwig
      Petition Organizer

I could not be more thrilled to announce that today Dave Skeberdis, the man charged in Nubs' case with the hoarding and neglect of over 500 birds, pled guilty to all charges. He will be under probation, including counseling, for the next year, which will include reporting on the state of his home.

This is a HUGE victory for Nubs, his flock, and companion birds everywhere. I think everyone involved is satisfied with the outcome: Mr. Skeberdis will receive the help he needs, and he will be monitored while he receives that help.

Thank you to the many, many people who signed our petition, the DA's office and judge in the case who made sure justice would be served, and the media who has shown both sides of this emotional and difficult story.

Today a message has been sent to people everywhere, and a historical precedence: ALL creatures deserve humane treatment.

      All the best,
      Kristin Ludwig

    2. Jury Trial Scheduled for Mr. Skeberdis in Mid-September

      Kristin Ludwig
      Petition Organizer

In mid-September, Mr. Skeberdis will finally go to trial before a jury of his peers. We will continue to keep this petition active until the penalty phase is complete, assuming he is convicted.

We will continue to post updates on this case.

Also, we have begun a non-profit organization, inspired by this situation. Please visit us at www.nounwantedbirds.org to learn about our mission!

      Thank you for your support!

    4. Mr. Skeberdis Goes to Court in Just 3 Weeks!

      Kristin Ludwig
      Petition Organizer

On July 1, Mr. Skeberdis will finally be brought to trial. The next week is likely our LAST CHANCE FOR SIGNATURES before I turn this petition over to the DA and it is entered as evidence. We are almost at 1,000 signatures, so just one more push to make it over the 1,000 signature mark is all we need! I will provide an update on the case the day of trial.

Also, I am excited to announce that this journey has inspired me to start a non-profit organization called NUBS (No Unwanted BirdS), named after the handicapped budgie I adopted from the rescue. We are a charible fundraising organization supporting bird rescues, shelters, sanctuaries, etc. around the world, as well as promoting responsible bird ownership and education. We have a lot of fun our Facebook page: Nubs, while doing good work for birds everywhere. Please like "Nubs" Community Page on Facebook if you are interested in checking it out!

    6. Signatures are slowing down--we need your help before it is too late!

For those of you who have signed and are trying to help with our petition--please consider going back into the petition and "sharing" it with your friends through the petition site. That sends a message to your "friends" who do not necessarily see you in their news feed. We need one more big push before we run out of time, so please help before this animal abuser is allowed to repeat his offenses!! Thank you!

    7. 300 signature milestone reached!

      Kristin Ludwig
      Petition Organizer

Thank you all for helping us pass this significant milestone. I would love to see us get a signature for every bird, so please help me keep pushing to reach 518 signatures! I have really enjoyed reading your comments, too. With only 19 days until Dave's court date, we are running short on time to get enough signatures before I need to send out the petition, so if each of you could please try for 2-3 signatures from your contacts over the next day or two, it would be greatly appreciated!!

And again, thank you so much for your support--it is so inspiring to know so many of you around the world you care enough to help me stop this sort of abuse from happening again (and my adopted handicapped birds from the house thank you, too!)

    9. Petition update

      Kristin Ludwig
      Petition Organizer

Thank you for your signatures! I have spent the day contacting animal rights organizations and the media, in the hopes of gathering additional support for this initiative. The goal? 1000 signatures in 1 week! So please keep re-posting, sending to friends, organizations you might belong to, etc., etc. Please remind people to use their comments wisely--we do not want inaccurate or insulting comments that will discredit this campaign. For example, the judge has no intention of sending all the birds back to the owner (most have already been adopted out). The goal is to encourage the judge to mandate treatment and supervision for Mr. Skeberdis, so this does not happen again. This would also cover any alleged remaining birds that are still in the home. You guys are great--THANK YOU!!!

I am a bird lover, having 4 parrots myself and strongly feel that this man should not be allowed to repeat his actions.

Birds deserve treatment just as humane as one would give four-legged pets or any other kind of pet. Mr. Skeberdis needs help to understand and demonstrate his understanding of that concept before he is ever allowed to own more birds or any other kind of pet.

As a fellow bird owner, this really hit home.
