Every single day, a thousand mothers transfer HIV to their babies during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. Without diagnosis and treatment, half of these children will die before their 2nd birthday.

It doesn't have to be this way: Mother-to-child transmission of HIV is 100% preventable.

With the right testing, care and treatment, we can end pediatric AIDS for good. The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is working every day to implement proven strategies to eliminate pediatric AIDS in every corner of the globe. But to continue and expand this work, we must rally a worldwide movement of people who make every mother's fight their own.

We have the knowledge. We have the tools. Now we just need the collective will to realize our dream of a world without pediatric AIDS. Join A Mother's Fight and pledge to support the global movement to end pediatric AIDS.

The stigma of having HIV needs to be eliminated everywhere, so that people, including mothers, are more willing to seek the treatment they need for both themselves and their children. HIV can be an long term managable disease in most cases, but the major problems are lack of education, fear and the greed of the drug companies.

Meanwhile, in America, Canada and numerous other nations there is a need for these countries to follow Great Britain's lead and let men who have had MSM sex donate blood.

Babies coming into the world only to spend their shortened lives sick is an unspeakable tragedy.

The global cost of proper AIDS treatment cannot be afforded now, so we must focus on prevention. Efforts to prevent in utero transmission fight the disease and give hope for a new generation free of the disease that has claimed so many of their parents.

How can we hope to fight this terrible disease if we don't stop it from entering new generations? Pediatric AIDS can be prevented, so it must be prevented.

I had no idea 'till I read through this page that mother-infant transmission was preventable; every effort should be made to halt the advance of this disease to a new generation.
