End breed specific legislation on American Pit Bull Terriers in Missouri

    1. Petition by

Heart of America Pit Bull Club

The American Pit Bull Terrier has been criminalized by the media and by citizens who just don't know or understand the breed. These dogs, when properly raised, trained, and maintained are gentle, loyal, and extraordinarily people friendly. They are not the vicious, human eating beasts they have been made out to be. Because of ignorance, improper or lack of training, and criminals who use dog fighting as a place to do their drug business, these dogs have earned a reputation as being violent, unpredictable, and not good family pets. This couldn't be farther from the truth, and the legislation that is in place now banning these wonderful family oriented dogs needs to be done away with completely.
American Pit Bull Terriers are just dogs, and like any dog, if they aren't trained they can be a problem. This is NOT a fault of the BREED. It is a fault of the OWNER. As a retired veterinary technician, I can honestly state that I have been threatened, growled at and bitten by more "family" dogs, such as Golden Retrievers and Shih Tzus and not ONCE in 15 years did I receive anything from a Pit Bull besides a slobbery kiss and a wagging tail...even when I was drawing blood or trimming toe nails.
Breed specific legislation and banning a breed of dog is simply ridiculous. If you look at the statistics, more bites, aggression, and attacks occur from Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds, and Chihuahuas than Pit Bulls, yet the Pit Bull is singled out and discriminated against. In the past, it was Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, and Rottweilers that suffered media driven hysteria and BSL. It's time now to revise our way of thinking and stop letting the media feed the phobia and hysterics regarding this once celebrated breed of dog: The American Pit Bull Terrier.

It's the people that make the dog bad so educate the population and save the pitts.

Don't judge by breed. As a child I was bitten by several dogs...none of them were pitbulls-all were supposed to be "family friendly breeds." You CAN'T judge a book by it's cover and you CAN'T judge a dog by it's breed.

This law is nothing but a way to spread prejudice and fear against a specific breed of dog.

Pit Bulls are generally great dogs! I work in rescue and there is no reason for BSL, in fact, one of the sweetest dogs I know is a Pit Bull named Paul Ray.
