The local LEA were informed by the FAA, by the local traffic controller and by a pilot from another Sheriff's department that no rule was breached, yet they still held this man in jail overnight and subjected him to false and malicious prosecution rather than admit their mistake. This is beyond incompetence. This is willful vindictiveness. Note: Though I am a resident of Spain, I hold FAA pilot ratings and fly regularly in the US to maintain my ratings. I am reconsidering doing so again if I am at risk of this type of unwarrented harassment.

I was initially angry when I read this story in AOPA. But when I read Sheriff Byrd's response I could see another side to it. The officers responded to a situation that was outside their understanding. With hindsight they over-reacted, but hindsight has 20/20 vision.

There remain some serious matters to answer though - the arrest report contained proven exaggerations by the author, and the hounding of clearly an innocent man long after the truth had been discovered raises questions about the culture within US police forces (not just Darlington) - specifically it implies 'convictions matter more than justice'. I wonder how many unsafe conviction appeals this will cause in Darlington.

This story does have global reach - I read it in London, England.

Because someone was arrested, charged and detained for doing nothing wrong or illegal.

USA law enforcement goes over the top in any situation seen on documentary TV programs. This incident continues to show the overreaction and lack of humility when mistakes are made. They held him for the FBI on a trumped charge when in all reality they could have released him and The FBI could have interviewed him later as everyone knew where he would be.
