With the recent death of Kiwon, a 30 year old giraffe, who died with a beachball-sized wad of plastic food wrappers in its stomach, it has become evident that the administration at Indonesia's Surabaya Zoo is incapable of providing proper living conditions and nourishment for the animals under its care. Animals at the zoo are emaciated and provided with little space to move. In addition, there is concern that some members of staff are involved in illegal wildlife trafficking. The conditions at Surabaya Zoo cannot continue. We urge the Indonesian government to take responsibility for the welfare of the animals, or alternatively, relocate the animals to zoos that are able to provide the appropriate care.
