As well as creating the petition for their mother, Natalie and her sister, Samantha, reached out to the manufacturer of their mom's medication, Genentech. Genentech recently approved their case and will be covering the cost of Avastin treatment for a year. While Independence Blue Cross did not reach out to their family, Natalie found another way to accomplish their ultimate goal. Natalie says, "My family would like to thank all those who signed and shared the petition. We all feel overwhelmed by the kindness and support of family, friends, hospital staff, complete strangers, and Change.org."

My mom has been battling Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) for over three years. She has gone through countless chemotherapy cycles with various drugs and months of radiation. Throughout it all, she has had terrible side effects like severe nausea, vomiting, loss of balance, and numbness in her legs and feet. However, she is a strong, stubborn person and refuses to give up. Unfortunately, Independence Blue Cross has given up on her. They have denied my mom a life saving drug called Avastin (Bevacizumab). Avastin is a tumor-starving drug that blocks blood flow to the tumor thereby causing it to stop growing and shrink. She has been given Avastin in two previous cycles of chemo and had good results with it.

It is important to note that Avastin is a mainstay of standard systemic therapy in advanced NSCLC and FDA approved for that purpose. To date, the incorporation of Avastin into her chemotherapy has kept her cancer from metastasizing to new sites in her body. Avastin combined with a chemo drug Taxol (Paclitaxel) has been the secret to disease response and stabilization in my mom's situation. She has tolerated this combination the best of any regimen to date. Avastin alone did not work for my mom and in her situation it has worked only in combination with Taxol. Although she has Stage IV cancer, she has had dramatic improvement while on Avastin and Taxol.

Independence Blue Cross, please approve Avastin for my mom.

My parents died because of cancer. years later, I'd still give just about anything for a single extra moment with them. I beg you to give the possibility of that chance to her daughters.

It is a very expensive drug, and only the rich can afford. Unfortunately, Cancers do not distinguish as to who has money to pay for these drugs, and who doesn't. Drug companies are always getting money from the Government, so why cant they return the tax monies that have been paid in by these souls who have diseases that those drugs are the difference in life and death.

My late husband was overexposed to toxic chemicals from the Dept of Energy, Defense.... why. who knows. but he was not the only one, thousands who have worked at these nuclear facilities have cancers, and other diseases, but they still cant be covered, because of the hoops they and their survivors have to go thru to prove anything... thanks to our Government, again, but will they take care of their own..NO.

All I can say is "This is just so sad". I'm speechless and it very hard for me to be that way! Who made the da*n insurance companies become United States king, God, czar, master etc. that can decide our destiny? Whether we live or die? Did we not pay into insurance? What is this world coming to?

My Lord we need to come to reality and not let these insurance companies get away with it. I just wish I knew the answer. It's sad.
