Update the current sound ordinance

    2. Petition by

      Chuck Harwood

      Huntsville, United States

Proposed modification: "Decibel levels at the source, for live music in a licensed restaurant or permitted event not to exceed 100 dB. Decibel levels at the source, for live music in a public place, without a proper event permit or business license (musicians in a park), no higher than 85 dB. Decibel measurements shall be taken at a receiving line no less than 60’ from the source, in linear feet, for a licensed establishment or event with special permit shall not exceed 70 dB at the measuring spot, and 65 dB for an unlicensed gathering or a gathering without a special permit.

We need to provide a comfortable living situation for all downtown citizens and visitors, while allowing entertainment venues and the associated entertainment to provide for said citizens. Currently, the measurement technique is vague and allows for interpretation, as well as is very low for associated events/musicians. We ask that the changes be made to allow for everyone to enjoy their experience downtown as well as in their living establishment.

Local music is important to the community and should be allowed outdoors!

I love listening to live music. Loud live music. Outside. Inside. Big city. Small town. Live music (as in loud) is and always should be part of the downtown experience. And so should all of the other wonderful noises associated with downtown living: dumpsters being emptied at 6 a.m. and leaf blowers and weed eaters running on the courthouse lawn before 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. Yes, those are my fond memories from my time living downtown in a city comparable in size to Huntsville. Life is GOOD -- Keep it LOUD!!!

I believe that live music needs to be loud enough for everyone to enjoy.

We need the revenue that bars pay in taxes from each cocktail they sell.People want to be able to hear a band when they go out, if they can't get it here, they will spend money in another city. Nashville, Chattanooga, Birmingham and Atlanta aren't very far of a drive....let's follow their good lead!
