      Melbourne, Australia

This petition of citizens of the Commonwealth of Australia calls upon the Federal Government to intervene to save the jobs and livelihood of over seventy blind and vision impaired workers employed by Vision Australia Enterprises. We deplore the impending sackings which will hurt the most vulnerable members of the workforce.
We draw attention to Article 27e of The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which calls on State Parties to “Promote employment opportunities and career advancement for persons with disabilities in the labour market, as well as assistance in finding, obtaining, maintaining and returning to employment.”
We note that many millions of dollars have been offered by governments to other industries in order to save local jobs. We therefore call upon the Australian Government, House of Representatives, to provide the necessary financial assistance to keep Vision Australia Enterprises in operation and save the jobs of blind and vision impaired workers.

Senator Christine Milne, Leader of the Australian Greens
The Honourable Adam Bandt MP, Greens Member for Melbourne

    1. Blind workers jobs - the government should step in!

Supporters of the Blind Workers Union will be visiting an opposition MP in Melbourne's north to discuss this petition. We are appalled by Vision Australia's decision and we are continuing to fight for jobs.

    2. Disgraceful decision by Vision Australia Board

      Helen Said
      Petition Organizer

Many blind workers were devasted by the Board of Vision Australia reaffirming its decision to close its supported employment program as of next March. Many workers would face a drastic pay cut if they work at other supported employment programs and some might never find other jobs. This is a disgraceful decision. We need to support blind workers in any way we can. Please continue to support this petition and follow the Blind Workers Union on facebook.

    3. Donate to blind workers' fighting fund!

Being disabled should not mean being disqualified from having access to every aspect of life."

      -- Emma Thompson

"The more I read and the more I talked to other parents of children with disabilities and normal children, the more I found that feelings and emotions about children are very much the same in all families. The accident of illness or disability serves only to intensify feelings and emotions, not to change them."

      -- Judith Weatherly

“Acceptance of one's life has nothing to do with resignation; it does not mean running away from the struggle. On the contrary, it means accepting it as it comes, with all the handicaps of heredity, of suffering, of psychological complexes and injustices.”

      -- Dr. Paul Tournier

It is disgraceful that a group of people who have no possibility of employment elsewhere should be denied the dignity of having access to even menial and, for heavens sake, low paid employment and training. My late son benefited immensely with training with RVIB.
