Stop $4.4M From Being Wasted To Demolish The Friendship Trail Bridge

The Friendship Trail Bridge is a Tampa Bay icon. Since its opening as a recreation bridge in 1997, over 900,000 citizens have used it. According to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at USF, they have confirmed that the “bridge has a very low probability of failure (19 in 100,000 [.00019%]) under self-weight alone between 2009 and 2029.”

Meanwhile, the Hillsborough County is facing a $14.5 million budget shortfall. They are proposing to partially demolish this bridge -- rendering it useless to pedestrians, and creating a senseless eyesore in the middle of the Tampa Bay community.

Ask for ideas and bids for how to save this great asset for the community -- not just to tear it down. We could even lease the bridge for $1/year for the next 50 years, and allow entrepreneurs, community leaders, artists, and creatives to use the bridge and make it sustainable. Fundraising and the funds from vendors and pedestrians will pay salaries, operating expenses, maintenance, and repairs.

What You Can Do:

First, sign this petition to send a message to your local representatives. Furthermore, flood the email inboxes, write letters, and call your elected officials of Hillsborough and Pinellas counties -- and ask them to stop the bid. Tell them to stop wasting our taxpayer dollars in demolishing a bridge which can benefit our community.

I was hooked the moment I stepped on the bridge for the very first time. It is an unique experiance that all residents and vistors should be allowed to enjoy.

I would love to see a bike trail created on this bridge. My family is willing to donate to restore it, and we would use the bridge as a pedestrian or bike trail on a regular basis! Thank you.

I was a daily commuter across the friendship trail bridge and when it closed I was forced to ride with motorists who thought it was fun to go as fast as possible across the bridge... who knew when one of these assholes would lose control and kill themselves and me with them. I miss the friendship trail for my own security and safety.
