The current distribution of science funding in Ireland marginalises the fundamental sciences, which are part of a knowledge ecosystem linking universities to industry and to Irish society as a whole.

Fundamental research is about advancing our knowledge of our surrounding. Generally it doesn't have a commercial value and why should it? Everything doesn't have to be about making money....

Science is a candle in the dark - without proper funding, that light is in danger of being extinguished, leaving us with nothing more than pseudo-science and superstition.

Too many stupid people in government at the moment. We need to let a few mad scientists get their hands on them.

Funding for fundamental scientific research is funding for all of our futures. The current arrangements will result in at best incremental increases in our knowledge. As it has already been noted, the electric light bulb did not come into being as an incremental advance on the candle. Further, the current status that the chief scientific officer of Ireland now has no role in advising on science policy is laughable. Who now does advise on Science policy?

As a scientist, amateur astronomer and campaigner for access to information, I believe that a country's competitiveness is linked to the how well science and open discussion on scientific matters are fostered.
