Implement National Registration of Paramedics

    1. Sponsored by

Australian College of Ambulance Professionals NSW

This petition is in response to and directed to the Health Workforce Principal Committee consultation to explore options for the regulation of Australian paramedics. This committee will report to the Standing Council on Health, a Ministerial Council made up of State, Territory and Commonwealth Health Ministers.

It is the view of paramedics that the only option available in current consultations that will adequately protect the public from the risk of injury or harm is option 4, the implementation of national registration of paramedics within the currently existing National Scheme, administered by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Such national registration would:

• Ensure restriction of the title ‘paramedic’ to those qualified to use it

• Establish a national standard of education and accreditation to ensure that all Australians receive the same standard of care from their paramedics

• Establish a national, independent regulatory body to investigate and uphold professional standards of conduct and competency to practice

• Ensure a more transparent and standardised method of reporting complaints and sentinel events

• Prevent unqualified or unsuitable persons from operating as paramedics in any setting

• Allow for a more flexible and responsive paramedic workforce that is not burdened by inconsistent regulatory and practicing requirements

The other options proposed would not adequately protect the health and safety of the public and all aspects that contribute to this.

We the undersigned, urge Australia’s Health Ministers to consider the importance of such and issue and implement national registration for paramedics. This will ensure the continuation of high quality care and protection of the community by our paramedics, now and into the future.

    2. One week left! Have you done your best to support Paramedic registration?

With only a week to go until the consultation on Paramedic Registration closes, its our last chance to make that little bit of difference out there in the community. This petition (and our paper version) is an important component of our submission as it gives weight to what we are saying. Your support of this petition provides the committee with the opinion of paramedics and the community alike. It is important to us that this opportunity is not missed and we are able to secure a national model of registration, not a mish mash of state systems that provide inconsistency and confusion, and do not provide for public confidence and protections. Please support this petition by referring it to friends and family, and promoting it on your social networks like twitter and Facebook. Your assistance is appreciated, and by working together we can ensure Australia's Health Ministers make the right decision on this one.

    5. Petition progressing well but we need your help to spread the word

Hi All, thank you for signing our online petition in support of the call for the national registration of Paramedics as a health profession. We have had a great response to our paper and our online petitions, however we need your help in spreading the word and getting more people to sign. We also have a fast approaching deadline for submissions and this petition needs to go with it to the Government Committee. Please send a link to this petition to your friends, relatives, workmates and fellow students. This is an important and rare opportunity for our profession and if registration doesn't happen as a result of this consultative process, it is unlikely to happen again. We also believe option 4, a national registration scheme, similar to the scheme used to govern the Nursing, medical and allied health professions is the only option. Please support this petition and forward it on! Thank you for your support and your action in promoting Paramedics!
