Dondi Johnson: The safety committee will present to the Hartselle City Board of Education a live shooter drill that will take place during non school hours. No children will be involved with this live drill.

This type of drill, where a pretend gunman comes into the school with a fake gun, is mentally detrimental to elementary-aged school children. I believe a lockdown of the school is sufficient enough. No child deserves to be involved in a situation where someone is even PRETENDING to threaten their lives. As a parent of a 1st grader at F.E. Burleson, I believe this can only cause more harm than good. No one can ever prepare themselves enough for a devastation such as a school shooting. It is the parents' jobs to teach their children about these disasters as THEY see fit for their own child. It should not be decided by a Board of Education or any other group. I fear that this may cause serious, traumatic mental damage to these children, causing them to go to school every day in fear, WAITING for a gunman to show up. I believe that faculty and staff should have this drill on the weekend, or perhaps a Teacher Work Day, when there are no children present.  Also, the parents were never notified of this possible decision, nor were we even informed that this was being contemplated.  We found out through the news and on Facebook.

    14. Update!!

      Dondi Johnson
      Petition Organizer

I spoke with the director at a mental health facility, and he agrees whole-heartedly that this is too extreme. He believes it is detrimental to the children's mental well-being and he feels it will de-sensitize our children. He was not allowed to sign the petition because of the business's rules and regulations, but claimed he wouldn't hesitate to sign if it were him personally. This coming from a man in that profession says A LOT! 1/17/2013

Also, the chairman of the Hartselle City Schools BOE, Dr. James Joy. If I can get their actual email addresses, I can have this petition emailed to all of them once it is complete!

I have a child in the Alabama school system and don't want him to experience even a pretend situation. There are better ways than that.

I agree. This is terrifying to students who will then live in fear of such a situation. THe likelihood of it happening is very low. A drill that prepares the teachers, or one that is not so graffic for the students is much better.

The school board should reconsider, it is likely a child would be hurt or at the least firghtened.

Don't kids see and hear enough lately about guns in schools that they DO NOT need to see it 'acted' out at their school!!
