Gulf Ridge Council: Reject the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy

We, the Scouting community of the Gulf Ridge Council in and around Tampa Florida, urge the Gulf Ridge Council and Scout Executive George McGovern to reject the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy.

Many of our Sons started Scouting at age 6, while in the first grade. They have dreamed pinning that Eagle on their uniform for more than half their lives, please do not take that away from them. Be strong and take a stand for what is right for all our sons by acknowledging their dedication and effort, orientation should never be considered when we are talking about supporting and loving our children.

Service organizations including the Girl Scouts, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and the 4H Club all welcome gay kids and adult leaders. Also, the American Medical Association has opposed the Boy Scouts' anti-gay policy, saying it could cause psychological trauma in youth.

We love the Boy Scouts, but we can’t support this policy. That's why we urge you to speak out and adopt an inclusive policy like other troops, packs, councils, and lodges across the country have done -- so the Boy Scouts can maintain its relevancy, improve recruitment, and truly live by the principles it teaches its members.

NOTE: We encourage everyone to join this campaign, but if you're a current or former Scout or leader, please say so in the "Why People Are Signing" section. Thanks!

Kids are born gay. They don't have a choice in the matter. There are still some people who don't understand about being gay. I don't think that should enter into their being a member of boy scouts. Boy Scouts provide a camaraderie and edcucation and team work. Being gay would include that, too.

It is important to not shun one's service as a Scout for such a trivial matter.

My son is an Eagle and I know how important it is to him so I would hate to see that opportunity kept away from another young man because of religious BIGOTRY!
