STOP SUPPORTING THE ABUSE OF BIRDS FOR THEIR FEATHERS!
Down is the soft layer of feathers closest to birds’ skin, primarily in the chest region. These feathers are highly valued because they do not have quills. Most products labeled “down” contain a combination of these underfeathers and other feathers or fillers.

Most down comes from birds who are victims of the meat and foie gras industries. Ducks and geese often have their throats cut and are then scalded in hot water to remove large feathers. Sometimes, the birds are still conscious when they are dumped into the tanks of hot water.

In addition to obtaining down from slaughtered birds, a large amount of down is torn from the bodies of birds who are still alive. Live plucking causes birds considerable pain and distress. Once their feathers are ripped out, many of the birds, paralyzed with fear, are left with gaping wounds—some even die as a result of the procedure. Workers often sew the birds' skin back together without using any anesthetics. Up to 5 ounces of feathers and down are pulled from each bird every six weeks from the time they are 10 weeks old until they are up to 4 years old.

Buying down also supports foie gras production, in which ducks and geese have tubes forced down their throats and grain and fat pumped into their stomachs until their livers become diseased and enlarged. The birds are slaughtered, and their livers are sold as a “delicacy.” Many foie gras producers supplement their income by selling the birds’ feathers.

Undercover video footage obatained from PETA shows employees on goose farms pulling fistfuls of feathers out of live birds, often causing bloody wounds as the animals shriek in terror. The frightened animals are often squeezed upside down between workers' knees during the painful procedure—in one instance, an investigator photographed a worker who was sitting on a goose's neck in order to prevent her from escaping.

This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. We should never cause animals unnecessary pain, this is just cruel.

I watched the footage from the PETA video and it's just heart breaking and one of the cruellest acts I have ever seen. Retailers really need to stop buying into these products, it's unnecessary and unethical. People really need to be made aware of the process that goes into these products. This really needs to stop!
