Grand Rapids Public Schools: Cancel the plan to make all GRPS schools require uniforms

    1. Petition by

      Tim Graham

      Grand Rapids, MI

GRPS's new plan includes making all schools adopt uniforms. At school, our clothing is a way to express our creativity and individuality. If we are required to have uniforms, everyone will look the same, and we will lose part of our power to express ourselves. School will become boring in yet another way. Although this idea is proposed for a good reason, it is a bad idea in the end. Students will still find ways to protest the uniforms. It will ultimately be harder on the school's staff to enforce the uniforms than it is worth to begin this program in the first place.

The original plan can be found here (The part about uniforms is on page 11)

We now have a printable flyer that you can put in your school or neighborhood. The flyer can be found here:

Our clothes make us who we are! We are constantly told by our teachers, parents, and leaders to be ourselves! How are we supposed to be unique and stand out if we are the same? NO UNIFORMS! :)

I think that uniforms take creativity out of the learning environment which is important for children and teens of all ages. If we all look the same, there's no way to express ourselves. While there should be rules about the clothes we wear, we should be able to wear what we want.

Wearing our own clothes show our personality and shows people who you really are. With uniforms you wear what they say and holds you back from showing who you really are
