Betsy Parks: Change.org site allowed everyone with a computer to connect. People who would normally not get to know each met. Gave us a tool to express our frustrations, solutions and today our success as the Governor removed the DKBOE!

Dekalb County School Board members have apparently strayed from their focus on their fiduciary duty to Dekalb County's next generation and devolved into political bickering and self serving power struggles. Strong action by the State School Board and the Governor IS REQUIRED IMMEDIATELY. SACS closing comments: "Despite attempts of various experts and organizations to bring about sustained change in the culture and operation of the Board of Education, extensive efforts, costs and resources expended in this endeavor appear to have been wasted...as soon as the monitoring concluded and members were left to self-regulate, their own patterns of behavior re-emerged...if not corrected immediately thousands of Dekalb County students will be negatively impacted for years to come."

The State Board hearing is February 21. Hopefully their decision will begin a new day in DeKalb.

Why the DeKalb County school board may be toast, despite...

I once referred to Michael Thurmond as one of the most cautious men in Georgia politics. Retirement has changed him. Thurmond, the former state labor commissioner, left campaigning for a law office after his gentlemanly, 2010 run against U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson. This son of an illiterate Clarke County share-cropper has a reputation for both affability and deliberation.

    3. You have to see this to believe it.....A dysfunctional, power grabbing BOE

A dysfunctional, power grabbing BOE who has failed to adopt and provide an ethics policy as required by law hires a new Superintendent or overpriced spokesperson for the DKBOE? Just so very unprofessional and cheep but not inexpensive. DSW2 reports we are already on hook for $10,500,000 for legal bill in 2013. Yes, thats MILLIONS!

DeKalb's Senate delegation to the Georgia General Assembly called School Board members to the State Capitol on Jan. 8 to help the district avoid a threatened loss of school accreditation. In a scathing Dec. 17 report, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools put the district on a one-year probation.

On January 17 at 1:00 p.m., the Georgia State BOE will meet to determine if they should recommend to Governor Deal that he suspend the members of the DeKalb County Board of Education. This would allow him to clean house and effectively hit the "reset" button for the troubled school district. It's important to understand that the Board could wait to decide what steps, if any, to take. SACS has given DCSD until 12/31/2013 to comply with its recommendations.
We can't afford to wait. We must insist that the State BOE act now. Please SHARE our petition with every property owner, school parent, blog writer, neighborhood list and media person you might know. There will be no opportunity for public comment but each GA State School Board member will each be given a copy of the signed petition as of approximately January 15, 2013.

My house is for sale & I am losing bids because of bad school system and board. Residents are leaving DeKalb because of bad schools.I disagree that school board can use taxpayers money for their legal fees.
