Release Non-Violent Prisoners held under Three Strikes

Many men and women are serving life in California State Prisons for non-violent crimes. They are not eligible for relief under Prop. 36 because their crimes are considered "serious". Serious can be swiping a purse off of a coffee table and stealing less than $10. Serious... wrong yes, a crime yes, worth LIFE in prison? I don't think so. My family is being ripped apart for this very reason.

My husband was offered a plea bargain, if he would have accepted the 18 years for stealing $3 and a blank check he would be coming home right now under Prop. 36. However, he did not accept the deal so he was charged with Burglary instead of Petty Theft (his original charge), he was given Three Strikes, even though he had only been convicted once before, and he was sentenced to Life... even though the judge didn't want to sentence him, he said the current law had tied his hands and that my husband must be sentenced to Life as this was considered a "serious" crime under the penal code. It's been 10 years now. Did you know non-violent Three Strikers are NOT eligible for any good time or milestone credits? That means no matter what they do to better themselves, no matter how good they are they aren't coming home any sooner, they are sitting in prison wasting tax payer dollars.

Please help these men and women, help restore families and stop wasting resources that can be used to better our families instead of tearing them apart.

Jerry Brown, Governor of California
California Governor

U.S. House of Representatives
Governor Jerry Brown and the State of California

Sincerely,

Please reconsider non-violent prisoners held under 'three strikes' and ensure that common sense is used to make these decisions! It not only makes those involved look foolish, but also lacking in compassion and understanding. Please rectify these mistakes. Thank you.

      Dear President Obama,

I wrote you several years ago concerning the Three Strikes Law in CA. We were hoping that the reform and passing of Prop 36 was going to grant our family and many others relief, it has not. I have started a petition asking someone, anyone to take notice and help. My husband has never had a violent crime, he has served a decade in prison for what was originally charged as a petty crime (the theft of $3 and a blank check) - my family is struggling. I have three children, one is disabled and will always be with me, one is headed off to China in two weeks where she will be studying Neuro-Science at NYU's Shanghai campus, and one is just starting high school. I'm attending school, I'm working, I'm trying to keep my family together. We live in Maryland, I sold everything we owned and tried to move to an affordable area of Arizona so that we could be close to my husband, due to my son's medical condition it was impossible and we lost everything. Now here I am, stuck in Maryland so far from my husband all over again. I don't mind working hard, I don't mind the struggle, I just want what every wife deserves, I want my husband here to live this life with me. Please, there has to be something someone can do for my family and the thousands of other families suffering. There is no justice here - under Jerry Brown's own law he should be in jail for failing to obey court orders. Since when do we set back and allow our people to be treated so?

The three-strikes law is, on it's face, absurdly harsh. Nobody is above legal reproach, including those who write the laws. I've heard it said, and given how many different laws there are in this supposedly "free" country I'm inclined to believe it, that there isn't a single person who ever lived in the country, that hasn't regularly broken at least three laws. This country won't truly be free as long as the politicians are bought and paid-for by the prison industry.
