Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey: Change "Civil Union" to "Marriage".

In December 2006, the New Jersey Legislature passed a bill providing for civil unions for same-sex couples and recognizing other states' civil unions. When Civil Unions were enacted in New Jersey, it was with the premise that those so joined would receive all the rights, responsibilities and privileges of civil marriage, except for the name.

Under the provisions of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), same-sex couples in marriages or civil unions did not have any right or entitlement to the 1,138 rights that a married couple has under federal law.

On June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court invalidated DOMA, which denied federal benefits to gay couples who are legally married in their states, including Social Security survivor benefits, immigration rights and family leave.

Unfortunately, since New Jersey used the term Civil Union rather than Marriage, those of us that have been joined by Civil Union will not be granted the same rights, responsibilities and privileges of civil marriage on a federal level. Separate is definitely not equal.

I am asking you to sign this petition to tell Governor Christie that he must change the term "Civil Union" to "Marriage"…sign same-sex marriage into law. We must be afforded the same benefits of marriage. We have been treated as second-class citizens long enough.

Goal - 250,000 signatures.

Contact Governor Christie and tell him you want same-sex marriage signed into law.

It is shameful that we are even having to discuss this!

I hate the term 'Civil Union'. As a non-religious member of the queer community who has been baptised and has a Jewish godmother, I can't honestly believe that marriage is considered to be only for Catholics and Christians. It's not a religious concept. It's a contractual concept.
