Gov. Shumlin, Sen. Ayer, and Speaker Smith: Thank you for leading the way for Death with Dignity in Vermont

    1. Petition by

      Death with Dignity National Center

Today is one for the history books.

Moments ago, Governor Peter Shumlin signed a bill making Vermont the third state with a Death with Dignity law. With his signature, Vermont is the first state in the US to enact a safeguarded assisted dying law through the legislative process.

This couldn’t have happened without the help of countless champions throughout Vermont, and leadership from three lawmakers especially stands out. From the beginning, Governor Shumlin publicly declared his support and stated several times he would sign a Death with Dignity bill lawmakers presented to him. Senator Claire Ayer and Speaker of the House Shap Smith fearlessly defended the bill as it made its way through both legislative bodies.

Please sign our letter to thank these dedicated champions of laws allowing for safeguarded assisted death.

Thank you for your support of Vermont’s Death with Dignity legislation giving terminally ill Vermonters the right to determine the timing and manner of their own deaths. Your tireless dedication and diligence led the way for Vermont to become the first state in the US to enact a law through a legislative body. It’s an historic accomplishment, and you have our heartfelt thanks.

Sincerely,

    1. We reached 100 signatures! Will you help us get to 200?

Thank you, everyone, for helping us get to 100 thank you notes for these champions of Death with Dignity laws! It's often quite challenging for lawmakers to publicly support laws to expand end-of-life options, and these three were among the most vocal. Please help make sure their brave stance gets the recognition it deserves, and ask your friends to sign this thank you note too.

      Thank you!

I've always believed compassion and death with dignity should be a basic human right. I hope Ohio will pass this same law!

As more states approve this I hope New York will follow, G-d forbid I am ever in this situation.

It demonstrates that a legislature in the US can pass an aid in dying law and is an inspiration to the rest of the world.

I strongly believe that one's own death is a deeply personal matter of one's mature intelligent choice.

I want this option. I want this right for Floridians. I want a national right law.
