The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) has improved at-risk children’s health, growth and development, and prevented nutrition related and other health problems for more than 35 years. WIC children enter school ready to learn, showing better cognitive performance. WIC also improves the health of at-risk mothers during pregnancy and helps to rebuild nutrient stores after birth. Research demonstrates the importance of maintaining good nutrition status between pregnancies to assure future healthy birth outcomes (National WIC Association, 2011). According to the National WIC Association, “If they are unable to reach a deal in time, sequestration will occur and WIC will receive an 5.1% cut, or the equivalent of removing 600,000 mothers and young children from the program, nationally.”

It turns out that last month WIC was able to appropriate enough back-funding to make up for the immediate 5.1% cut to this year's program! HOWEVER, this is only a quick fix. Sequestration of the WIC program will still have devastating effects over the next 10 years if it is not addressed! Keep spreading the word!

Plan That Would Spare Vital Programs Is Expected to Pass Senate

WASHINGTON - The worst of the federal cuts to a major infant nutrition program would be reversed. Embassy security and construction could be spared in the wake of the consulate attack in Benghazi, Libya. And child care subsidies, once seen as critical to the success of welfare reform, would take a haircut, not the hammer blow that President Obama once loudly warned was coming.

Why would you take away sorely needed support from pregnant women and children?
