Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) Board of Education (BOE): Keep 9th Grade Athletics

February 2013

From Martin Engel: FCPS BOE voted to keep 9th grade athletics.

The proposed FCPS budget cut for 9th grade athletics is a small fraction of the 2014 operating budget yet it has the potential to have a tremendous impact on a huge percentage of high school student athletes. Eliminating 9th grade athletics creates a void in a student athlete’s life at a time when they need it the most. Athletics teaches students discipline, respect, and time management. The social aspect of sports is just as important. Having a sense of cooperation, teamwork, and friendship on a team can keep students out of trouble. If there is an increase in Interscholastic Athletics costs, as listed in the proposed budget, and there are no other resources to allocate towards the cost, then please consider raising the sports registration fee per student to keep 9th grade athletics.

I am pleased to report the FCPS BOE voted to keep 9th grade athletics in the budget at tonight's meeting. While this is not the end of the road for the FCPS budget process we can claim victory in our fight to keep 9th grade sports in the FCPS budget. Below is a list of next steps/dates in the budget process. I suggest we all keep an eye out on the parts of the budget that mean the most to you and for you to stay involved in this process.

I would like to personally thank each and everyone one of you that signed this petition, passed this topic around, and wrote to the FCPS BOE members. I would also like to thank the local High School Boosters and the local youth athletic associations that helped get the messages out to our community. We ended up with over 1600 signature in just over 3 days.

      THANK YOU!!!

We are in the news! The FNP posted the below article and will be doing a follow on story later in the week. Also, our local CBS news station will be streaming the story all day on 99.1FM or @ cbsdc.com.

I plan on presenting our petition to the FCPS BOE tomorrow night at 6 PM during public comment. Please plan on coming to show your support. Bring your kids that are or will be affected. Bring your kids that have already gone through 9th grade sports. Sign up to speak if you have something to say. Come one, come all!

What else can we do? Get your local Youth Athletic Associations to come to the meeting and show their support. Ask that they send a message out to their membership telling them to let the FCPS BOE know how they feel regarding this topic. Ask what they are doing to support this cause? And if they support our cause, ask them to sign this petition if they haven’t already.

Please keep spreading the word! We have had over 100 supporters in just over 2 hours and we are on our way to 200. During this time I've sent a message to the FCPS BOE, Superintendent Alban, and the Frederick BOCC inviting them to view our comments on this petition. I've also sent this petition out to many youth organizations in our area to ask if they could spread the word as well. Finally, I've also asked the FNP and Gazatte if they would be interested in covering this story.

Why iHello FCPS Board of Education members,

My name is Andrew Herman, can you help me understand why is eliminating 9th grade athletics necessary? I am a straight A student in all honors/accelerated classes. I've also doubled up on science courses this year and have gotten all A's with final class scores all above 87%. I am a 9th grader currently and played in the JV Urbana Soccer team. Sports are important to schools. They unite the students and teachers, and they prove that not only can we excel in sports of all types such as basketball, football, volleyball, soccer, field hockey, ect... but that we can attain great grades at the same time. This is what seperates FCPS schools from other MD schools. Meaning other school districts in different counties don't do as well as Urbana, Oakdale, and a handful of other schools which are doing so well academically while participating in sports. Therefore, I don't see eliminating 9th grade athletics as a fit choice for all of the schools that work so hard in both categories.

      Thank you for your time,

      Andrew Herman

Athletics are critical in the life of young athlete. I would absolutely be willing to pay a higher fee to maintain the program. Dear Board members, please reconsider and let the young athletes thrive in their sports.
