Dementia is not a sound bite! Dementia/Alzheimer's is a cruel epidemic that shatters lives, families and communities.
On the weekend of October 13th, after the 2012 VP debate, Dr. Keith Ablow (who is on Fox News' payroll) appeared on Fox & Friends Weekend to discuss Joe Biden's performance. And this is just a small part of what he said, " I did not evaluate Joe Biden, but if someone said to me, “listen, we want you to do what’s really required to know what happened there,” you have to put dementia on the differential diagnosis. You have to say bizarre laughter, interrupting… If this were your dad or your grandfather, wouldn't you say, if you brought him to me, “Keith, you gotta tell me, is he suffering with dementia? Because he can’t seem to listen, he’s laughing inappropriately…”
Is this what it has come down to for ratings? For sound bites? Fox News' slogan is "Fair and Balanced". I don't see anything fair or balanced about this statement. What I do see is a statement that is ignorant, insensitive and irresponsible.
In regards to his statement that if someone brought a father or grandfather in to him to be evaluated, let me stop him right there. We did take my dad in when he exhibited symptoms of dementia, but we took him to a neurologist,... A real doctor, who is bound by the tenets of the hypocratic oath (Dr. Kieth could use a refresher on the "do no harm" aspects of that professional creed)... We consulted with a highly trained specialist that is trained to investigate, diagnose and treat neurological disorders (including cognitive disorders like dementia and Alzheimer's); not a political spokesperson trading off an academic degree in a thinly-veiled attempt to forward a politically-motivated agenda.
Dr. Ablow's potential diagnosis of Joe Biden for dementia is based on the statement, "he can't seem to listen, he's laughing inappropriately...".
I am not a doctor, but I am a daughter who watched my dad loose his memory and his life to Alzheimer's (the most common form of dementia). This is what dementia looks like: It is a man with a Masters in Physics from UC Berkeley, who while on a business trip to a place he has been 20 times gets lost and doesn't recognize where he is. It is a man that needs his wife to make him a list of what the day will look like. It is a man that can't dress him self any more. It is a man that has lost his use of language. It is a man that can't remember that I am his daughter. It is a man that doesn't know the woman in front of him is his wife of 40 years. It is a man that doesn't know the two little boys next to him are his grandsons. That is what dementia looks like!
There is too much hate in our world today; I think we can all agree on that. We need to start standing up to those who say hurtful and insensitive things. That is why I am standing up for all the individuals, the families, the caregivers, the friends, the millions of people dealing with this horrible disease. These people are giving all their energy, their love, their resources to help their loved ones, and the last thing they need is to have someone diminish their plight with sophomoric, ill-founded commentary. This is a real issue affecting millions and the number is only growing.
Fox News, if you truly are Fair and Balanced, you will realize your mistake and you will apologize for your statement. We deserve an apology and we deserve better.
