Compensate the unemployed fairly for the introduction of the carbon tax

    1. Petition by

      Robert Campbell

      Christies Beach, Australia

From the 20th of March the Clean Energy Supplement will be paid fortnightly to all people on government benefits to compensate for the introduction of carbon tax. However, there are two levels of compensation i.e. one level for pensioners and another level for the unemployed e.g. a single adult pensioner will receive $13.50 per fortnight whilst an unemployed adult single will receive only $8.40 per fortnight. As this payment is compensation for the introduction of the carbon tax which has increased the prices of electricity and food etc for both pensioners and the unemployed at the same rates the compensation should be the same. Whilst, some people may have negative views about the unemployed and these views are often promoted for political gains I for one believe they should be compensated fairly for the introduction of the carbon tax which impacts just as much on them as it does on pensioners. Please sign this petition in support of fairness and justice for the unemployed.

The govt is blatantly discriminating and punishing the unemployed instead of creating work so they can attain an equal quality of life.

I may be on a carers pension and about to receive the higher rate, but I fail to see how those on newstart are less affected by the increase in things like power bills. I will admit most of these power increase are just because of corporate greed but this still does not account for all of the increases we have to face.

The carbon price is a tax on the use of a limited natural resource, the atmosphere, which belongs to no person more than any other. When rationing by price, or "selling", a limited collective resource, the revenue rightly belongs equally to every person and should be distributed equally to every person. Any differential in the dividend, payment or "compensation" to particular individuals represents an impost or tax on those who fail to recieve the maximum monetary reimbursement. This is equivalent to fining people for the misfortune of finding themselves unemployed and is is an immoral regressive tax which further victimises victims by depriving people of their birthright of an equal share of Australia's allocation of the planet's atmosphere.
