Repeal the Lifetime MSM Blood Ban.

Men who have had even one sexual encounter with another man in his lifetime are banned from donating blood in the United States. This lifetime deferral is medically and scientifically unwarranted. Every two seconds someone is in need of blood, and men across the nation who are willing to donate safe, life-saving blood are not allowed. Other countries have successfully lifted or modified this ban with no negative consequences, and the United States should follow.

I'm signing because I believe science, not prejudice, should underlie policies in public health. While some restrictions on who may donate based on sexual and other behavioral history are necessary to protect the safety of the blood supply, surely we can come up with a better way than this blanket ban. As a heterosexual woman, I could, theoretically, be taking a lot of risky actions on a regular basis that would make me a greater risk of transmitting HIV than some homosexual men, and yet the Red Cross doesn't ask me about all of the risky behaviors I could be engaging in.

I'm O+, which a lot of people can use, so I shouldn't have to lie to be able to save a life.

I am just as healthy as a straight guy and the Red Cross needs blood. It's stupid that I can't donate.

There is no valid reason why homosexual men cannot donate blood.

I'm signing because I don't particularly care what someone's orientation is if they happen to be saving someone else's life.
