Ensure local food producers are part of the Exeter City Centre Strategy.

A strategic review regarding the future of Exeter's city centre is currently in play. We are concerned that recent discussions have not yet included any plans to involve local food producers and retailers. 50 years ago over 50% of food and drink consumed in Exeter came from the surrounding countryside. Today the figure is less than 5%. Devon is renowned for its quality, artisan food producers and quality beef, lamb and dairy produce. As the capital city of Devon, Exeter is wonderfully positioned to make the best of these resources. The support of local food producers and retailers by Exeter City Council would help the local economy, bring in tourists, contribute to the sustainable production of food for the local community as well as providing a vibrant and diverse element to the city centre.

Firstly, we wish to thank you for supporting our petition to Exeter City Council. Since submitting our response to the council's consultation we have also met with leading councillors and impressed on them the importance of ensuring that the interests of suppliers of fresh, locally produced food are not ignored in any plans they make for the future development of the city centre, in particular the bus station site. We believe that we were given a reasonable hearing and that those with power and influence are fully alerted to the issues which concerned those of us who signed the petition.

We will keep you posted in the future on any important developments. Thank you again for your support both present and future.

Local food - good for the community, good for the environment, good for local jobs, good for local people. Good for everybody. What more can you say. Common sense.

Supporting local food producers is good for the environment (reducing food miles), Good for local employment (increasing demand for the produce of local suppliers), Good for Customers (ensuring fresher, higher quality produce is available locally), and Good for innovation (where there is local demand for local food, artisan producers will think of new ways to add value to the local ingredients and raw produce available). Please believe in our local farmers, growers and artisan suppliers who can make a difference to the food available in the City of Exeter!
