Elected Officials: Approve Missing Link - a bike trail in Santiago Creek between 5 Freeway and Fisher Park

      Santa Ana, CA

For decades it has been a goal to establish a continuous bike trail from Santiago Oaks Park to connect with the Santa Ana River Trail in the city of Santa Ana, a distance of 9.7 trail miles. With the recent completion of 8.5 trail miles by the city of Orange, this is one section needed to complete the entire trail located in Santa Ana. This "missing link" is the quarter-mile gap located in Santa Ana, in the Santiago Creek, between the I-5 Freeway and Fisher Park. This area, currently a repository for trash and graffiti as well as a haven for vagrancy, is very difficult to monitor and police. A paved bike trail will remedy much of this by providing public use and police access in addition to completing this important regional trail.

A grass-roots neighborhood organization, Neighbors for Santiago Creek Bike Trail, was formed to further the goal of a bike path in the "missing link" along Santiago Creek. This "missing link" is the 1/4-mile gap located in the Santiago Creek, between the 5 Freeway underpass and Flower Street.

Your support for the trail "missing link" of the Santiago Creek Bike trail is much appreciated. The consultants have come in and made proposals on the bike trail plan and your review and recommendations are needed. The City of Santa Ana will host two open houses for residents to review and comment on concepts and recommendations contained in the city’s draft update of the General Plan Circulation Element and ways to improve neighborhoods, housing affordability, and mobility as part of the General Plan Housing Element.
The open houses will be held on:
      • Saturday, April 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Southwest Senior Center, 2201 W. McFadden Avenue, and
      • Thursday, May 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Santa Ana Senior Center, 424 West Third Street.
The Circulation Element contains new and exciting proposals for the city’s streets, bike routes and sidewalks.
      Thanks for your continued Support!!!

Thanks for your support for a trail in the "missing link" section of Santiago Creek (in between the 5 Freeway and Flower)! We'd like the idea of the trail to be placed on the City of Santa Ana's Master Circulation plan (so that the City Council can then vote on it.) The City has hired a consultant to consider its circulation plan. At this point, the consultant has two open houses scheduled as follows: (1) 1st Community Open House, Wed, Feb. 8, 2012, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m, Santa Ana Senior Center, 424 W. 3rd Street; and (2) 2nd Community Open House , Sat., Feb.11, 2012, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Senior Center, 2201 W. McFadden Ave.
You should attend one or both of these events so this trail is placed on the City's plans! We know that the opponents of the trail have been very vociferous so we have make certain that our demands are heard! Please plan on being present.

My bicycle is my primary transpiration and I use it to get everywhere in Orange County. The Santa Ana River Trail is my freeway. Please complete this part of the trail, (and I'll even help clean up the trash)!!

I like biking this trail, and see all the leadership of all surrounding communities supporting the trail ... except Santa Ana.
