Christina Casteel: Per our request the Dane County Sheriff came out and determined the route to be unsafe for K-5th graders to walk. Thank you for everyones support I couldn't be a more proud mom right now!! :)

Our children that live on Echo Drive in Sun Prairie, WI (6 kids) range in age from Kindergarten to 5th grade and they are being asked to walk to school this year. 1 mile to school and 1 mile home across busy streets with no crossing guards and streets with no side walks. My son is 5yrs old and has never been to this school before.

They have bused children form this location for the last 10 years because of the hazardous crossings. This year to all of our surprise they have chosen not to bus our children with no notification to the families in the area. This is a complete disregard of our children’s safety as nothing has changed to the route to school since last year.

We are appalled at our school district for thinking this is in the best interest of our small children. Please help us make them hear our voice. Let them know that we will fight for our children safety today, tomorrow, and for the rest of their lives.

In the past 10 years the children from Echo Drive Sun Prairie, WI have been able to ride the bus to school. This year they are being told NO with no notice and no regard to our children's safety. This is unacceptable please do something about this.
I support the children of this community do what you know is right and keep these children safe.

This is not just affecting children that live on Echo drive. All of the streets that are being affected by this are: Apple Drive, Olympic St. south of Apple, all of Echo, all of Andaman, all of Villa Circle, all of Fountain, all of Castle and Walker south of Andaman. If you know ANYONE with children on these streets, please spread the word. I will be going door to door and handing out fliers about this meeting and the issues that are going to be dealt with.

Thank you for all of your concern and support. We currently have 528 signatures on the petition, the more we can get, the better!!!

The Sun Prairie School District has agreed to bus our children through the 1st semester strictly due to the fact that they had only given us 1 week notice. Also, per our request, the district has agreed to have the Dane County Sheriff come out and complete a hazardous road survey. To our shock and dismay, this will be the 1st one done since the 2003-2004 school year. If the outcome of this “survey” is that these roads are safe for children to walk on, come 2nd semester they are fully expecting our children to walk to school. We have been advised that we will be given an opportunity to present this issue to the district during their annual meeting (details below). During this meeting, we will be presenting this petition along with our thoughts and feelings on this issue. We were also asked to get all the information on how this will affect their budget. I also have a child that did not qualify for the transportation and must ride a bike 1.7 miles to school and 1.7 miles back home every day across at least one major highway with cars driving 45-55 mphs; no stoplights, only roundabouts are present. When requesting transportation if space is open, I was informed there is no space available. This is not safe for my child, who is new to the area and has never been subject to this.
