Ebay.com & Craigslist.org: Make Bicycle Serial Numbers Mandatory on For Sale Listings

    1. Petition by

      Velosurance

Statistics show that 32 bikes are stolen every hour in the US. Stolen bikes end up on Ebay & Craigslist daily and unsuspecting people are buying stolen property from dirt bag thieves.

It would be easy for Ebay & Craigslist to make serial numbers part of the for-sale listing process.

eBay goes to considerable effort to protect the intellectual property of music and film companies. It removes auctions for products it suspects are counterfeit and requires drivers to enter a VIN number when listing a car for sale.

Craigslist asks their customers to report suspect listings and will remove any listing that they find is not authentic. Craigslist is a favorite of bike thieves. Almost every day you can read about a bike owner tracking his stolen bike through a Craigslist listing.

Now, with your help we can ask that eBay & Craigslist to help stem the sale of stolen bikes by placing a required serial number field into the listing process.

Serial numbers are found on most bicycles and can be used by owners or law enforcement to identify stolen bikes. Making it mandatory for sellers to list serial numbers on online ads will make it harder for thieves to sell stolen bikes online.

If eBay & Craigslist help us AND we all take the responsibility to write down our serial numbers and lock up our bikes up properly, we can start shrinking the marketplace for stolen bicycles. This is just one more necessary tool to help crack down on bicycle theft.

Please sign this petition to show eBay & Craigslist that their customers want them to make it mandatory to list a bike's serial number in bike for sale listings.

It is our hope that as responsible companies both Ebay & Craigslist will see that this is a reasonable request by concerned customers and that both Ebay & Craigslist can do their part to help stop online sale of stolen bicycles.

Thank you. Velosurance.com

I'm signing this because I've had a bike (and other property) as well stolen by dirt bag thieves!

Because bike theft is a huge problem, especially in San Francisco.

Having had bikes stolen before, this would make it much more simple to find them again and hopefully reduce the number of thieves on the streets dealing in stolen bikes. Its too easy to sell them as it is, and creates criminals of people that just want to buy a bike and end up unsuspectingly with stolen goods.

This is important to me because I know people who have had their bikes stolen. Many have quite a bit invested into their bikes whether it be hobby or transportation, and it should be not different than selling a car.

Because we can't shoot bike thieves. Yet.
