Gavin King wrote “If a woman drinks to excess and is raped or assaulted, is she partly to blame? As uncomfortable and difficult as this question is, the answer surely is yes."

Unbelievably this man has been endorsed by the LNP and is the candidate for Cairns. He’s even got a good chance of winning at the Queensland state election in March.

But he has views that have no place in modern politics. In addition to his assigning blame for rape on survivors, he’s called the baby bonus “a dodgy money making scam for poor people with high libidos”, and complained about having to “iron my own shirt two days in a row” when his wife didn’t do it for him...

These kinds of views have no place in modern politics. If enough of us speak out, Campbell Newman will see Gavin King for what he really is -- an electoral liability. He should be disendorsed as soon as possible, and replaced with a candidate who isn’t stuck in the misogynistic dark ages.

    1. LNP Cairns candidate Gavin King calls Chinese 'freaks'

The above is the headline to a Courier Mail article today which makes reference to comments King made. And thought about. And wrote about. Deliberately. As a journalist. I urge you to read. While this isn't about the issue this petition focusses on, it's relevant as there's an entire back catalogue of King's articles. I've read them all. A lot of them shock me. This is a history. It's not a one-off (if it was a one-off, that would be more than enough to give reason why we're worried this person could be in a position of power in parliament in less than a month). Thank you.

    3. Update 4

I stand by my comments that King was a journalist, & words were his profession – he should have known better – and this was NOT a one-off mistake. It is a pattern of behaviour. However, the intention of the petition & our other efforts remains: to shine a light on the issue of sexual violence & victim blaming. We’ve ALL done that to a certain extent, & as such, we claim partial success. Thank you all. King’s forced apology wasn’t good enough, but maybe he will start to think about the seriousness of his words. The battle for those working to raise awareness of the issues of sexual violence & victim blame is far from over. We will not be silenced on the broader structural issues surrounding rape apology. If anything, the #sackgavin petition & campaign has proved our point that these issues are marginalized, & that they need urgent mainstream attention. If we have ‘leaders’ who are so ill informed, then we’ve got a lot more work to do, even in modern Australia.

    4. Update 3

      Sarah Casey

On the 27/11, after all of the media attention, King appeared in The Sunday Mail with his wife & daughter. Family values or family man aside, it doesn’t mean he’s fit to help draft the laws of Queensland (in the opinions of at least 5000 people). There was, and I cannot let this go, reference that King had apologized. Past tense. I could not find this apology & still cannot. The article, in keeping with the family values it attempted to espouse, didn’t mention that King had said he’d stab a waitress in the eye for a meal being late. Nor did it mention that King had been angered by a man threatening suicide and thus causing a traffic jam. It also didn’t mention that he called Catholics ‘lunatics’ and ‘fruitcakes’, or even his own party ‘bogans’. King claimed in the article that his daughter changed him. Interestingly, in February of 2011, he wrote an article apologizing to his ‘blokey brethren’ for ‘helping women rule the world’ by having a girl.

    5. Update 2

      Sarah Casey

To be dismissed as being ‘Labor’ set-ups by Newman & King is simply unacceptable. They have made little to no effort to speak to the individuals operating the petition or the people commenting via Facebook , Twitter, or via direct email (over 5000 people). The question remains, do they really understand the issues at all? White Ribbon Day, 25th Nov., the day which marks a call to stop violence against women, was the day when the Qld Leaders’ debate between Newman & Premier Anna Bligh was held. Newman paid tribute to two female Brisbane City Councillors who’d help set up the ‘mud army’ during the floods. He said it was important to acknowledge them on White Ribbon Day. The connection between White Ribbon Day and doing one's job during a flood is tenuous at best.

**Campbell Newman's now deleted all but a handful of comments on Facebook from those speaking out against King and the way this has been handled**

    6. Update 1

      Sarah Casey

On the 23/11/11 (& continuing for days), as the petition edged closer to 5000 signatures, Newman’s Facebook wall was inundated by concerned citizens outraged at the lack of action, and dismissal of the King issue as a political stunt. As the activity ramped up in the social media world, the mainstream mass media started taking more notice, & the victim blaming comments of King, the petition and associated activism was reported nationally in newspapers, on radio & on television. Newman made a short statement on his Facebook wall claiming that he stood by King and that King had apologized. No explicit apology could be found despite the petition being operational for several weeks beforehand & thousands of email notifications had been sent to Newman. Later, Newman added insult to injury by claiming that the people commenting were 60 people put up to it by Labor. Simply NOT TRUE.

Thanks to everyone who has signed this, Tweeted it, emailed it, Facebooked it or directly contacted politicians with your concerns. We will not be silenced. We will keep going past our original goal end date of White Ribbon Day. We will take to the streets if we have to, but we will not give up until this is taken seriously by the QLD LNP. Victim blaming is a global issue. It's very real & it's happening everywhere. It has happened since the beginning of time. It just happens that this time the person who said these comments (and stands by them as does his party by it's dismissal of them as a real issue) is a potential lawmaker in Queensland, Australia. We'd be as outraged if this was happening, for example, in Perth, Cunnamulla, Paris, Boonah, Bowen Hills, New York or, as similarly has happened, in Canada (sparking Slutwalk globally. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SlutWalk). Please help us and pass this on and ask your friends to sign. WE NEED YOU! Thanks. PS: King's post below

Yesterday Matthew Condon reported in The Courier Mail on Robert Schwarten's (Labor Member for Rockhampton) words in State Parliament last week:

..."(Campbell) Newman also showed weakness in not disendorsing that disgraceful example of flawed humanity, the egotistical misogynist (LNP candidate for Cairns Gavin) King.

"Newman has not sacked this bloke; nor has he distanced himself from the views of this awful bit of work, and he has compounded the offence by attempting to explain it."

      Indeed. Well said, Mr Schwarten.

Today the issues highlighted in this petition received more national press coverage in a column that outlined the abhorrent and insidious nature of victim blaming.

You can read the column here: http://www.thepunch.com.au/articles/gavin-king-victim-blamer-and-woman-shamer

We've said this before, and will say it again, it does not matter your political persuasion or who you normally "cheer for"; this petition is about sending a very clear message that we, as a collective, will not stand by and accept that these sorts of attitudes have any place in civilised society.

It is also very pleasing to report that an elected LNP member has today unequivocally rejected these views. We applaud Michael Crandon for the work he has done to highlight the need to reject all forms of violence against women & for his work on the White Ribbon Campaign. He's a good man.

Let's encourage other politicians to make clear their position on this issue and how they plan to tackle it. Keep up the push!

Today, Crikey, an Australian news outlet, has run a piece that highlights the grass roots activism of all you good folks. It is sparking debate, highlighting the power of community, and most of all reinforcing the message - NO means NO.

But the battle ain't over and we won't give up. Please continue to share this petition amongst your friends and colleagues, ask your local representative what their views are on the issue, and call for further investment in support services for victims of sexual violence.

    14. Former LNP State Secretary, Joel Harrop, resigns in protest

      Sarah Casey
      Petition Organizer

Former Liberal National Party State Secretary, Joel Harrop, is reported to have resigned from the LNP in protest of the selection of Gavin King as a candidate in the next State election.

This petition has nothing to do with your political persuasions. Whether you vote Green, Independent, Labor, Liberal National or another party - it doesn't matter. Being able to exercise the freedom to vote for whomever you choose is one of the things that makes a country great.

This is about bringing focus to the very real issues of sexual violence and victim blaming, and saying, loud and proud, victim blaming won't be tolerated.

And if you want to seek public office, ignorance is no excuse, you must understand the impact of your message.

Thanks for your support - please keep sharing.

this reeks of the provocation plea for homicide - such things undermine the civilized human's obligations to self control which are the very crux of society's problems

Nobody ASKS to be raped! Rape is not consensual. There is no excuse to commit such a horrendous crime. Are children asking to be raped by paedophiles? Is it also a man's fault if he is raped? It is wrong to make the victim of such a crime feel responsible for the rapists obvious lack of self control and responsibility.
