Stop new development of a Chipotle Grill in Hershey, Pennsylvania

With recent news of a Chipotle Grill coming to the 200 block of West Chocolate Avenue in Hershey, Pennsylvania, residents have gathered opposition. Surrounding towns’ saturation of chain restaurants make residents concerned for the integrity of Hershey. Residents have begun to reflect on what we know as Milton S. Hershey’s vision for the community, and also on what we wish to share as a community – with our families, friends, and visitors. Residents wish to stop wild development of Chocolate Avenue and enact a stricter zoning policy to support small business and preserve buildings of historic value to the community. We urge Derry Township to revise their zoning policy to protect existing buildings of historic presence and also to restrict fast food chains, insuring Hershey’s beauty and character remain.

Downtown Hershey long ago lost its integrity as a cohesive village retail area. But the inclusion of chain restaurants will further erode what was, when I was a kid, a warm and inviting place to be. Hold out for zoning that allows only for unique and heritage buildings and businesses. That is the kind of place that will attract people other than HersheyPark visitors who merely want a meal cheaper than you can get in the park.

I don't like the way the town looks now. Everything is gone and this will not make it look better. Might be too late to have Hershey look like a great town again. Lost too much.

While it's true that Hershey attracts large crowds of people, it is also a residential town. And, although fast food can be convenient, it's never classy. It is not necessary to put the Chipotle downtown as it would be equally prosperous at the Hershey Outlets or along 39.

Need to promote local business. That area is too busy.
