Often times, street-base sex-workers encounter people who offer to give them a place to stay for the night or a hot meal in exchange for sexual services. "Survival Sex" is a point of entry into prostitution. An overwhelming number of the street-based populations in Denver trade sex for money due to being homeless.
Street-based sex work is not glamourous nor does it pay well.
When a person is picked up for solicitation, and given a charge this charge usually carries a $500 fine and up to a year in jail. This further perpetuates the problem as the person has few other options other than turn to the sex trade to ensure their basic needs are met and to pay this fine.
If prostitution was a crime that could be tried in homeless court, the fine and jail time associated with this charge would be dropped after a person completes community service. By signing this petition you are encouraging a connectedness that leads to positive re-entries back into the community.
