Dear Elected Official: Allow local input for a homeless shelter

      New York, NY

Community input and due process are part of the building blocks of our local democracies. The redesignation of buildings without any community input in a neighborhood full of concerned residents, families and local businesses seems to negate their role in community development and is a top down power move that negates the vibrancy and importance of local residents.

Hidden in a Carroll Gardens shelter project, an owner with 'terror' on his resume | Capital New York

Documents on file with the city show that the building slated to house a 170-bed homeless shelter in Carroll Gardens was constructed-and may still be owned-by a convicted felon whose crimes involved abusing the poor for personal gain. As I reported last week, the building is held in the name of a private corporation, Tunnel Condos LLC.

The controversial landlord behind a mystery-shrouded Carroll Gardens shelter project | Capital New York

On Oct. 18, The New York Times weighed in on the escalating battle over a proposed homeless shelter in Carroll Gardens, highlighting fears that the facility for 170 men would "set the now-thriving neighborhood back to its ragged and treacherous days."

Same outfit installed a homeless shelter under same circumstances in Manhattan. Yesterday, their elected representatives had some follow up. (PDF Download) October 17, 2012 Seth Diamond Commissioner NYC Department of Homeless Services 33 Beaver Street, 17th Floor New York, NY 10004 Dear Commissioner Diamond: We are writing to you today, once again, about the shelter that the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) has begun operating at 316 and 330 West 95th Street.

What does it say when you take the biggest building in a neighborhood, turn it into a shelter for 170 people with no community imput under an emergency dictate, give it to an organization "Homeless Solutions" that is just over one year old to manage, where the owner of the building is on the board and the organization is run by the former DHS Housing commissioner. Whose interests do they have at heart?

From the article in Capital New York below

"D.H.S. prepares to award a no-bid contract worth millions of dollars to the agency's recently departed commissioner, who appears, in turn, to be renting the building that will house the shelter from one of his newly established nonprofit's own board members."

    7. Lander, Squadron, Millman and Markowitz reach out to Seth Diamond.

Read their concerns and their letter here. Will Seth Diamond respond? He has till Friday. Will he come to the meeting on wednesday? The emergency dictate seems to mean he can do what he wants. Why will he backtrack now. millions of dollars in city contracts to the previous commissioner. Why listen to the residents or the elected officials. What's in a letter?

So this morning we faxed over the petition (it was at 350) to Seth Diamond (DHS) and Linda Gibbs at the Mayor's office. We also faxed Bill De Blasio and Christine Quinn. We'll keep faxing it as it grows. Keep circulating, and fax your own letter as well to the officials. Protest the lack of democracy and middle of the night power moves from officials and technocrats who run away after the fact.

After talking to Millman's office, Lander;s Office and Squadron's office all say they were unaware and are requesting for city input. This emergency dictate however is issued through the Department of Homeless Services and the Mayor's office. Let your voice be heard, phone LInda Gibbs at the Mayor's office and Seth Diamond, Commissioner for Homelessness. The phone and fax number is below. Thanks! Once we are at 500 I will fax this petition over to them both.

A new Carroll Gardens homeless shelter built on old relationships | Capital New York

A year ago, after the loss of state funding, the Bloomberg administration ended its signature initiative to combat homelessness, a rent subsidy program called Advantage. The policy change has been predictably devastating to the people who relied on the program, and who have since crowded into an already overburdened shelter system.

They have been working all weekend on the property. There's no DOB permit. Everyone phone 311 to report this, it obliges the DOB to investigate. We need to let our voice be heard.
