Darrell Dexter, Premier of Nova Scotia: Create a February Holiday for Nova Scotians

It's time for Nova Scotians to enjoy a February Holiday!

Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island and British Columbia celebrate a winter holiday on the third Monday in February.  With more than 70% of Canadians enjoying a holiday in February, it's time for Nova Scotians to enjoy this opportunity for time spent with family and friends as well. Given that Nova Scotia has the fewest statutory holidays in Canada – it’s time for this NDP government to declare a February holiday in Nova Scotia.

This would be a holiday for everyone, not just government employees. With no holiday between New Year’s and Easter, February is the perfect time to give Nova Scotians a break – some time to enjoy the company of family and friends and time to breathe in the best of our Nova Scotia winters.

I have fought for a February holiday for eight years, calling on three Premiers, including Darrell Dexter. Sign this petition and share it with everyone you know so that we can finally make this happen.

Liberal MLA for Halifax Clayton Park

I think we deserve a day off in Feb. because the winter is very long and Feb is normally not a nice weather month.

I have a very stressful job and the winter is a harder time to get through due to the cold and lack of light. If there was ever a time a year when I could use some time to restore myself it's in the winter. Knowing that we can look forward to a mid winter break would be reassuring and help us get through. It would make going back to work after the Christmas holidays easier. It feels daunting to face a three to three and a half month span before a break. I am a psychotherapist of 25 years and am aware that most people experience more illness, energy loss and depression in the winter. Having the provincial government make this decision would say to people that there health is a priority. Heathier people take less sick days and are more productive at work. That saves the province allot of money. Having more family time is also an important community value that I want our province to make known that it prioritizes. Three day weekends allow special get togethers and trips to occur. I'm not okay that our province has the least statutory holidays of all the provinces. This says that our values are off and we cannot be a proud about this as a province. Thank you Diana for not letting this go! It's about our values and creating a healthier, more compassionate and family oriented community.

The long winter and reduced sunlight is depressing for many people, and holidays give us time to balance out our activiites and lives.
