      Dear Friends,
Dr. Stephen Meltzer has started a petition on WhiteHouse.gov<http://WhiteHouse.gov> to urge the President to increase the NIH budget for FY2013. This is an urgent item for our community as the petition must get 25,000 signatures by March 18, 2022 so that the White House will review it. If we do not raise 25,000 signatures, it may be difficult for our many advocacy networks to convince the President and Congress to increase funding for the NIH. Please consider signing this petition and please pass it along to your friends, family, and colleagues.

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation invests in amazing early career scienetists like Kerri. Our hope for her and others like her is that they will have the resources they need going forward to make breakthrough discoveries, instead of spending their time applying for grants or giving up science altogether.

The NIH helps train thousands of students in graduate school become the researchers of tomorrow. They provide access to books, databases, professional conferences, and workshops that are instrumental in training prepared scientists capable of communicating with the public and discovering cures for a number of diseases that are ignored by big pharmaceutical companies.

Basic research conducted in academic labs is the foundation on which innovation, entepreneurship, and industry can build. Advances in medicine and public health would slow to a crawl without NIH support of basic research.
