Comment on blogs, write Op-Ed columns to raise awareness about homeless kids

Often, even in the Change.org blog, or in other media, issues pertaining to homeless kids are distorted.

Stereotypes need to be erased before we can address root causes of homelessness for families, teens and adults.

I'll look for the opportunities and respond.

One thing I find useful in writing letters to the editor and op-eds is to look at such things as maximum word length and the format of those who have been published in that particular publication, as this often changes from one publication to another. Also, there are publications that are very difficult to get published in, such as the NY Times, and others where all the letters are fifty words or less, thus don't offer much space to state your viewpoint. And, remember that if you go over the word limit of a publication, they will edit if it gets published and what they edit might not be what you would have chosen. Also, three things that newspapers look for is your credentials and whether you have professional or personal expertise in an area, whether what you say is newsworthy, and whether what you have to say has been said by others before. Good luck!

It's important to highlight this hidden tragedy in the media. Besides being the right thing to do, ensuring that homeless children have access to a good education and such things as good nutrition, shelter and health care is the kind of prevention that could make it less likely that a child later embarks on a life of crime. Education has been shown to negatively correlate with criminal convictions and recidivism and positively correlate with career and personal success in adult life. But, for a child to be more likely to be successful in the educational system, their home environment needs to be nurturing and provide for all the material and environmental needs of a growing child.

Check the HEAR US website, www.hearus.us, and go to the Understanding Homelessness section, and then to Homelessness in the News.

I've posted  and commented on recent stories extolling the reduction (???!!) of homelessness.

      I invite comments...
