Immediate Reapplication for APA Accreditation

    1. Petition by

      Concerned CIIS Clinical Psychology Students

We, the undersigned, implore the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) administration, PsyD faculty and related staff to immediately reapply for accreditation of the clinical psychology doctoral program by the American Psychological Association (APA).

Presently, in the field of psychology, lack of APA accreditation prevents students from access to training at numerous practicum and internship sites, thereby potentially reducing the scope of practice and level of competency with which licensed clinical psychologists both desire and are required to uphold. Already, clinical psychology students at CIIS have experienced limits to training opportunities that open doors to careers in many hospital, forensic and governmental agency settings. Additionally, without APA accreditation, PsyD students have lost financial aid funding that was once available, causing monetary hardships for many. Furthermore, graduation from a school that does not have APA accreditation presents challenges for individuals wishing to obtain licensure in certain states.

We are deeply concerned that lack of APA accreditation of the CIIS clinical psychology program will prevent current and future PsyD students from receiving access to a wide range of competitive and high level clinical training opportunities where professional skills can be fully developed in order to assist graduates in excelling within the field across multiple areas of clinical interest and focus.

It is our belief that the CIIS PsyD program deserves APA accreditation, and that it is both reasonable and ethically appropriate to expect the CIIS administration and clinical psychology faculty to begin working rigorously and with dedication on a new application for accreditation (with the expectation that accreditation by the APA is, in fact, possible).

In signing this petition, we are voicing our strongly held recommendation that the decision not to reapply for accreditation by the APA be both reconsidered and reversed, and that reapplication is made a top priority for the institute.

Thank you,

Concerned CIIS clinical psychology students, PsyD alumni, and supporters

I actually looked into psyd programs in the past and this was a major issue. It limits student aide funding and getting a good job.

A friend let me know about this situation, she told me (and other friends: "I'm applying for grad school, and I found this really incredible (like, tugs at my heartstrings kind of incredible) Clinical Psychology PsyD program, but it's unfortunately no longer APA accredited. This makes it difficult for students to receive financial aid, and it also greatly limits where students can gain internships or pursue careers."
