Don't Deport Luis Guerra

    1. Petition by

      Rachel Kling

      new york, NY

Luis is a 23 year old college student facing deportation to Mexico. Luis was brought to the United States at the age of nine, after several of his family members died or disapeared due to the violence in Mexico. Luis has never left the United States since his arrival.

At age 18, Luis was wrongfully arrested by the New York City police. After more than a year of incarceration, the charges against Luis were dismissed.

However, Luis was then taken into the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcment (ICE). For the past several years, Luis has been fighting his deportation. During this time, he has obtained his GED and finished 3 semesters at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, where he maintains above a 3.5 GPA. In addition to being in school full time, Luis works five days a week to help support his mother and United States citizen step-siblings.

The Obama administration has directed local ICE officers to exercise discretion and not deport individuals like Luis. However, ICE has failed to exercise discretion for Luis and they are continuing to advocate for his deportation.

Please sign this petition asking that ICE follow their own directives and not deport Luis.

This is a situation where certainly discretion should be used. Mr.Guerra is a contributing, responsible member of his community.

I think it's quite clear that Luis should not be deported. Let him continue with his life and let him achieve his aspirations. Why is deportation being rushed, why isn't any consideration being given? This is a life we are talking about, not something you just remove, like it's nothing.

This young man has done nothing wrong, on an ethical level, to deserve deportation. Even if our current immigration laws are just (which I doubt) he had no choice in coming to the US as a child. If US officials have discretion in this case, they should absolutely use it: it is a moral, if not a legal obligation. And besides, having one more motivated, hardworking, peaceable person in the US is a benefit to us all.

I am signing because Luis deserves a change and because ICE should follow their own directives.
