Chicago Board of Education and Chicago Public Schools: End the overuse and misuse of high stakes standardized testing

    1. Petition by

      More Than A Score

Our schools spend too much time, money, and energy on standardized testing and use the results to justify high-stakes decisions on school closings, teacher evaluation, and student promotion. The misuse and overuse of standardized testing is undermining educational quality (“teaching to the test”), quantity (multiple weeks per school year devoted to testing), and equity.

We are particularly concerned about the harmful impact of standardized testing on the education of low-income students, children of color, English-language learners, and special education students. Students, teachers, and schools should be assessed using multiple methods to capture a full picture of learning process and outcomes (e.g. portfolios, performances, observation).

We call on the Chicago Board of Education and the leadership of Chicago Public Schools to:
● Eliminate standardized testing for children from preschool to 2nd grade and greatly reduce it for 3rd grade and above.
● End the use of standardized testing data to evaluate students and educators and to close schools.
● Fully disclose the cost, schedule, nature, and purpose of all standardized tests.

    2. February 6 Day of Action to Support Seattle Test Boycott

As a way of showing our support of the teachers in Seattle who are boycotting the MAP test, we are launching a citywide petition drive at neighborhood schools next Wednesday, February 6, joining activists across the country in a national day of action: http://seattleducation2010.wordpress.com/2013/01/29/national-day-of-action-to-support-seattle-map-test-boycott/

We have blank copies of our petition in Spanish and English, along with a parent factsheet that can be taken by any supporter to any school before or after school to try to engage parents, teachers, students and community members on this critical issue.

My son will enter kindergarten in the fall. I am very leery of enrolling him in the Chicago Public Schools unless the district eliminates standardized testing for grades K-2. It is unnecessary and inappropriate. There are far more useful and effective means to assess student progress and guide instruction.

Enough with the testing. Just worry about teaching our kids.

this over-emphasis on testing is taking the focus away from where it needs to be: working on the basics in the classroom and making learning fun

I don't want the elementary school to be ONLY based on success and evaluation. This way of thinking pushes Principals to take wrong decision that impact our kids quality of life, increases stress, competition etc. that we directly lead our children to hate school all together!

Because I believe these tests take all creativity away from the profession of teaching and are a waste of time for our children, robbing them of deep, meaningful learning time. I also question how these tests are being used. these tests are used.
