Harvey Milk once said, "All young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe space and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential." The principal of Carbon High School is failing to recognize this as he tries to keep the GSA from purchasing safe space kits for the high school with money they fundraised.

I am the copresident of the GSA and since becoming principal thos year, Mr. Bean has told myself and the other copresident that he was weary of us starting the club last year and that he is beginning to rethink it. He approved our fundraiser of selling hot chocolate and donuts to purchase these kits.

Now he is saying they are too exclusive. What he forgets is that our FFA is raising money to pay for their entrance fees which are exclusive to that club. He also fails to realize that, if a student is safe to speak to a teacher about anti-gay bullying, then they should feel safe to speak about other forms of bullying. Mr. Bean also told my copresident that teachers are trained to deal with bullying, but antigay bullying is not even mentioned.

The GSA has already helped students to feel safe enough to come out and not be afraid. Mr. Bean needs to allow the GSA to purchase the safe space kits and allow more current students and future students feel safe.

I went to Carbon High School and honestly struggle calling Carbon County home when high school was a blur, didn't feel the safety but never did get harrassed. I wish I was strong enough to come out before my college life but not having a safe space surely limited myself.

School Administrators, should be the leaders of creating a safe school climate for all students. This includes protecting sexual oreintation and gender identity of students, which of course is all students. School should promote a school climate of safety, where all children can mature and thrive in education. If school educators do not acknowledge that all students have the right to demand and expect this, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identy, the are failing all students. This is a simple and helpful tool kit, that will give real examples of how to create "safe space" at school.

Everyone has a right to love who they love. It doesn't make them different from anyone else. I was in GSA in high school and I think it's a very cool program. No one should be bullied because of who they are. Love is love.

I am 2000% supportive of gay rights and their club should be able to do what every other club is allowed to do.

Having lived in Price, a community I love; having served as a funeral director at Fausetts from 2005-2006; having been witness to several suicides, to include that of CEU Professor William "Billy" Lanier in 2005; and as the current National President of Affirmation: Gay and Lesbian Mormons, I support the work of these students in proactively trying to educate staff in the unique issues of LGBT identifying/expressing/questioning/perceived bullying and call on Principal Bean to release the funds for the purchase and distribution of these safe kits.
